FROM THE PASTOR

To the Saints of Rock Creek Baptist Church:

Easter and April Fool’s Day falling on the same calendar date. That is an unusual event to say the least. It caused me to do some thinking. I did a little research (or rather my lovely wife did it for me & I looked at the facts she found). These two holidays fell together four times during the 20th century: 1923, 1934, 1945, and 1956. The next occurrence won’t happen until 2029 according to the article we read. Obviously April Fool’s Day is always on April 1 but Easter is a solar/lunar holiday decided by the date of the Spring Equinox, the full moon and the Jewish Passover. That’s a lot of things having to line up just right for the dates to coincide. But then on several levels the Scripture found in 1 Corinthians 1:27 applies to this occurrence for it states, “But God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong.” (HCSB)

The most foolish concept in the world’s eyes is the very thing that Christians celebrate with much joy on Easter (Resurrection) Sunday. It is the day that Jesus Christ overcame sin and death once for all. No longer must humankind make sacrifices for their sins and adhere to a stringent set of laws but rather a simple acknowledgement of their personal sin, a need for cleansing from that sin, and a yielding to the Lordship of Jesus Christ gives them a new life free from the law and set apart in the Kingdom of God.

Scripture says, “All have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God” in Romans 3:23. “All” is a very inclusive term. Merriam-Webster dictionary says it is every member or individual. So every human on planet earth has sinned which is a term that simply means we have chosen to do that which estranges us from God and that is truth whether you believe in the existence of God or not.

There is a penalty for that sin which is clearly stated in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” That death is an eternal separation from the presence of God. However, God offers us a free gift (it costs us nothing) which we can accept. That is forgiveness of sins through the person of Jesus Christ and an eternal future in the presence of God.

How can we receive this free gift? I’m so glad you asked!! Scripture tells us in Romans 10:9-10 that “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him [Jesus] from the dead you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.” Isn’t that the easiest thing to do. But somehow it seems too easy and therefore it must be foolishness. But that is exactly what God requires of each of us to have a personal relationship with Him.

Have you ever made that decision to accept the free gift of eternal life through Jesus. As we look forward to this special day of celebration of Christ’s victory over sin and death, won’t you consider surrendering your life to the Lordship of Jesus. He paid the ultimate price to redeem you to that fellowship with God!

Join us Friday night, March 30th @ 6:30 in a special service of remembering what Jesus did for us on the cross and then on Sunday morning, April 1st @ 10:45 join us in celebrating Christ’s resurrection from death!

Blessings!

Bro. Danny
